Basketball is a sport that is hugely popular in the United States of America and that popularity, believe it or not, crossed the borders from Canada. It is one of the most popular sports in the country. Sport is important in the life of any child, it teaches them discipline, teamwork and provides the necessary physical activity required to maintain good health. The game is played between two teams whose objective is to throw the ball through the netted hoop on the opposing side of the court, in order to score. In 1891, James Naismith invented the game while teaching at the YMCA in Springfield.

The Professionals

Canadians have been playing professional basketball since 1946 when the Toronto Huskies still played as part of the Basketball Association of America which subsequently became the National Basketball Association. The first league game was played by the Huskies in 1946 against the New York Knickerbockers however, the Huskies lost and the league folded at the end of that season. It was only in 1994 that professional basketball in Canada would take flight once more. It was in this year that the NBA awarded two franchises within Canada with the likes of the Toronto Raptors and the Vancouver Grizzlies. To date, the Raptors are the only league team from Canada.

Gifted Children

Canada is determined to keep basketball alive in the country. With the popularity of the sport still rising and the success of the Raptors in the NBA league, more children are dreaming of achieving success. Canada is filled with basketball camps aimed solely at improving on the skills of children who show an aptitude for the game. Most of these camps are run by skilled coaches who have knowledge of the game and what it takes to reach the top ranks. The camps are geared at building teamwork, good sportsmanship and developing fitness and agility. Camps are doing the sport a massive service.
